“I might try to sneak in on my break.[1]” “I’m sure they wouldn’t mind…[2]” How often have you heard about college students trying to sneak into a classical music performance? Let alone… attend? In “The Story,” John and Trishna are more likely to go to punk shows, and since classical music and rock music don’t often collide, what might inspire them to dress up to attend a more traditional symphony orchestra performance in downtown Eville?

[The Story] Vertical Slice, October 2018

I’ll casually estimate that I’ve published over 80,500 words related to “The Story” as of yet, even though all content related to it could easily surpass 150,000. Everything is nebulously floating around inside my head, loosely organized, so even writing specific ideas twice each week are just subjective rough drafts. My plan is to write everything in one go after I feel confident that I can. Until then, here’s a 6,000-word vertical slice walking through “The Story.”

[The Story] Focusing on Goals

The most miserable people I’ll meet always have goals and no plans for achieving them. Large or small – whether it’s getting out of debt, buying a boat, getting a job, getting a better job, or finding happiness – I’ve found misery in people’s life perspective when their goal is impossible rather than difficulty obtainable. If my current big goal is writing “The Story,” centered on John [left] and Trishna [right], what goals are they focused on?

[The Story] Words Mean Nothing IV

Words mean nothing between Trishna (left) and John (right). As main characters of “The Story,” they’ve built rapport via thousands of digital words and hours of phone conversation before ever meeting. While other side characters may falter over minor miscommunication misunderstandings, typically, they understand each other almost subconsciously. That might be the cosmic romantic ideal, so I’m taking my time to explore their personalities and understand their faults fully, before I begin writing their story.

[The Story] Meeting Their Heroes

They say meeting your heroes is a terrible thing because of over-expectation. Stumbling through my words and thoughts, I gained artistic context and overcame shyness from meeting some of my “heroes.” How about John (center-right) and Trishna (center-left)? Do they even have celebrity figures they admire? Let’s take a psychological detour for this week’s update to “The Story” and consider how respect for authority, ambitions, and the drive to emulate, create, or procrastinate inspires idolization.

[The Story] Keyboard and Mouse

Since I primarily type and navigate technology with my right hand’s index finger and thumb, I’ve tied these fingers together for method acting during this week’s update to “The Story” to empathize with how John (below, left) would use technology. It’s not easy! John and Trishna (right) are fortunately strong-willed characters, so let’s explore how they’ve adapted to their impairments, how their world broadly considers accessibility, and how technology has helped both them and us.
