[Rowing Machine] 2018: Week 10 {240.0}

It’s been close to a year now of weekly fitness updates, originally just purely essays and now featuring some technical or somewhat anecdotal fitness information, and I can now officially say that I’m regularly and comfortably tightening my belt loop one loop! I used the previous loop basically as long as I’ve has this belt, other than my 6 month, 60 pound weight loss period, along with its surrounding months, so it’s a huge achievement for me!

[Rowing Machine] 2018: Week 08 {241.0}

“Maybe it is all the heavy metal inside of you that shows on the scale[1]!” As much as I don’t want to be influenced by ephemeral external motivators, it’s still nice reading the occasional positive vibration. The number on the scale is just an external unit of measurement for my internal success: if I put on two pounds, but I feel as though I was more successful with my health, did I fail? Objectively? Subjectively?

[Grime/Glitter] Seattle’s Mercer Problem

Seattle traffic is beyond capacity. A stretch of I-5 (northbound and southbound) that usually takes around 5 minutes to drive through in light traffic now exceeds 20 minutes when all the commuter single-occupancy vehicles leave their gigs at 5PM. Wade it out until 7PM and it’s less terrible. The traffic focuses until, and dissipates after, one point: Mercer Street. Our new neighbor has invited all of their friends without the least bit of consideration for anyone else.

[Sober Living] Concerts Are Risky

WAC 314.11.015 3(g) often causes me to choose reclusion. I am fed up with this! “Employees may not…” “Permit any person consuming, or who has consumed within the licensed premises, any type of marijuana, usable marijuana, or marijuana-infused products to remain on any part of the licensed premises.” While concerts are the riskiest, I’ve smelled cannabis in libraries, restaurants, buses, and everywhere in downtown Seattle. My safest route to avoid imposed psychosis is to stay home.

[Concert Review] Pain in the Grass (2017)

Seattle radio station KISW hosts an annual all-day concert festival, Pain in the Grass, at the White River Amphitheater. This year’s eclectic performers, appealing to their fanbase or appearing in their programming, included Korn, Stone Sour, BABYMETAL, The Pretty Reckless, Yelawolf, and more. This outdoor event is similar to the Warped Tour, except there’s nothing to do except listen to music, or maybe sleep out on the lawn. Were the performances worth risking a sunburn?

Average Rating: ★★★☆☆ [3/5]

[Thrifting Adventures] Al’s Music, Fire

The fire destroyed nine businesses in the Federal Way, Washington complex, including one of the three Al’s Music, Video, and Games stores. It’s not clear if it was arson. “It’s just fortunate there was a space between the buildings.” Al’s is one of the remaining family businesses specializing in used media that haven’t been swept up by the ubiquity of online retail. Let’s cover what’s helping them stay relevant in this somber Thrifting Adventures episode.

[Event Review] Lake City Toy Show (Spring 2017)

Vendors at Renton City Retro told me about Seattle’s hidden collecting secret for the last twenty-two* years: Lake City Toy Show. Unlike the more mainstream retro show that had videogames, action figures, and other fun activities, this was where you’d find anything more obscure. Cool for serious collectors. How about for everyone else? If you were in the area for the car show, or happened through town in the early afternoon, was there anything worthwhile?

Rating for collectors: ★★★★☆ [4/5], otherwise: ★★★☆☆ [3/5]
