This entry in my playthrough of Pokémon LeafGreen will be less directly related to character building/discovery and more metaphorical, exploring what interests me about Pokémon and other media along with their relation to what I want to create. The way I see it, all media are tools to teach or entertain, but it’s a matter of finding that which teaches or entertains what is relevant to you. You can do that with defining and refining.

While I haven’t done the degree of character design I had brainstormed out in “Incidents Build Characters,” during this play session of Pokémon LeafGreen, I realized that I was overthinking things. I can start simply then build out the characters that need building out. When I came across the need to name three new characters around a central theme, I decided to build out a Generic Character List for Novel 02 based on material from Novel 01.

As I continue along toward completing my playthrough of Pokémon LeafGreen, I’ve wondered about the benefits of playing this game from not just a relaxation/escapist perspective, but from a narrative perspective. In “Inconsequentially Building Characters,” I have wondered whether having the names alone would be enough to help me brainstorm character ideas? I decided no, overall. Organic, non-contrived storytelling is usually better, in my opinion.

When I introduce new characters into my fiction, as I did with characters in my first novel, I started off with a batch of characters that the main character, Sammohini, would interact with throughout the novel. I’ve been using my playthrough of Pokémon LeafGreen to brainstorm character attributes. While I decided on one new character during this session, I don’t think anymore that tangental character naming is an effective tool of deciding on new characters.

Continuing thoughts from “Daily Dog Diaries?” summarized as how I subscribe to dog social media sites to remind me of my childhood dog Patrick and for brainstorming ideas for “The Story,” a scene popped into my mind where Trishna’s mom says – of Trishna’s sister Sammohini, her friend Jane, and Trishna’s service dog Pollyanna – “the girls are out for a run.” From that one imagined quote, I built a backstory with, maybe, their family’s weekly routine.

In “The Story,” there was always a looming threat of war in the background whenever I’d think about the central characters – John and Trishna – or side characters like Sammohini, main character of my first novel. There have always been national wars for as long as I’ve been alive, from afar, but now it seems like with COVID-19, the war is here. This may make me seem entitled but I’d never experienced looming threats of conflict.

When I was going to PT, I was letting the fiction worldbuilding for “The Story” do its thing. Whether that’s all me injecting my experiences into a world or me unearthing a fully-realized world is a debate whose answer, if there is one, will reside outside of this essay. However, going there did give me access to certain scenes where Trishna had been going to PT for years, and then after they meet, John joins.

Years ago, I seriously considered whether “The Story” would take place on a farm. Although I have only had one opportunity since then to go to a real farm, which ended up consisting of staying in the farmhouse and having no farm tour, does Farming Simulator 2019 suffice as simulacrumous substitution? Not in the ways I would want. It is more about the mechanics than say Harvest Moon, but between those, will there still be farming?

I think I’m bored by movies because most offer no psychological nuance. They offer depth of character in other regards, and they show many aspects of character, but they don’t reveal character. Maybe we should add an addendum to this mentality with “uncover, don’t show and don’t tell,” which sounds like pretentious pedantry, but it implies that we can show information or we can uncover it. When I write, I uncover my character’s psychological nuances.

The characters I like most represent one of two character archetypes: characters that either learn about some kind of personality trait about themselves, or, help serve as plot surrogates for some kind of greater theme. Not every character tends to be that lofty, but when I like the characters for more than just a witty line or aesthetic, it typically tends to be something deeper like that. How about John and Trishna in “The Story?”
