You sometimes might not realize how much the grime that’s accumulated in your system is affecting you until you start dislodging it. The stresses of life build up innocently. Too many days without getting enough sleep, not eating well, not drinking enough water, or not taking care of yourself can, like my rowing machine’s chain, generally lead to a build-up of gunk that probably slowed down my rowing stats for years… let’s compare next week?
Maintaining my rowing machine has become a fun hobby for me. While I’ve known about some metric and standard/American sizes for a while now, it’s a fun tidbit to know that the seat, shown in the upper part of the picture below, is in metric whereas the rest of the machine is in standard. Concept2 must have outsourced that part of the production. If only we could maintain our bodies as easily as our machines.
I was in athletic shape once. I worked hard for months, rigorously studying fitness, until stopping for years. Careers are similar. You get the degree and perhaps opportunity, until you stop trying. Maybe you don’t get fired, laid off, or underemployed. Maybe it’s just you get disenfranchised. The nice thing about being a contractor, workin’ “the gig life,” is that your career fitness is always in athletic shape. You’re always fit and ready to work.
The Gig Life means always keeping your resume updated. On the last weekend of every month, I’ll look at my resume, and add a little more to it. My primary resume is three pages. I start with my contact information, mission statement or summary, then experience. Education fills out the second page and the third page lists out any relevant professional skill. No lies or exaggeration. My resume is my ticket to the next gig.
“I have nothing to write today.” That thought stopped me in my tracks during one of my better rowing sessions. What a challenge! Let’s walk around the idea of writing blocks until we find a point to start chipping away what stops us. If writing blocks are anything like sculpting blocks, then it could be as easy as screwing inhibition and starting, although if it were that easy, then there’d be nothing after the jump.

For this week’s rowing column, let’s talk about motivation. Why exert so much effort in the process of rowing? Why exhaust yourself? Why try when it’s not surpassing your best? External motivation is temporary. Internal motivation remains when the inspiration is from a visceral moment in your past. As I was taking some photos on the morning of February 17th 2017, I realized that I was being hindered, and that it was time to get motivated.
We covered basic advice for treating sickness last week, so let’s cover an ailment that’s worse than mild illness, fever, or allergies. Headaches make you instantly regret doing anything other than laying down with constant pressure to your head and might be terribly stressful to the body and mind. I’ve asked some doctors for advice, and have done independent research, so here’s what I’ve done to help overcome headaches and eventually return to clear thinking.
