I’ll casually estimate that I’ve published over 80,500 words related to “The Story” as of yet, even though all content related to it could easily surpass 150,000. Everything is nebulously floating around inside my head, loosely organized, so even writing specific ideas twice each week are just subjective rough drafts. My plan is to write everything in one go after I feel confident that I can. Until then, here’s a 6,000-word vertical slice walking through “The Story.”

I am inspired by everything. My nebulous memory recalls obscure scenes from movies last watched years back or situations experienced months ago. The resulting recollections create unique new memories. In this collaborative environment, it is, therefore, most important to observe and understand myriad random circumstances. “The Story,” in my initial attempt would proudly wear its references, reflected even in its name “References,” but now as I develop John [bottom-right] and Trishna [bottom-left], that consideration changed.

If my ambitions for “The Story” include comprehensive commentaries on the nature of our reality, how much nuance should go into those commentaries? A thoroughly-built restaurant might evoke patron conversations idly chatting over the fine flatware or reveal restaurateuring price negotiations for finer flatware. The narrative should always guide the focus. It’d waste your time and my effort if Trishna (left) and John (right) only visited Zbigniew’s (center) Teriyaki once. But if they go frequently…?

In my last summer without obligations, between high school and college, I spent most of that innocent time writing a foundational element to “The Story” References stars John (left) as “everSOL the Valiant,” crash-lander on a strange planet that is driven to find his dearest friend “Trisha” (right). Ten years ago, “The Story” was a nebulous creature, floating through the ether of my inner imagination. John “everSOL the Valiant” Ebersole and Trishna, then minus the N, had some representation, both in References and casually. These characters and their world were otherwise firmly in the back-burner on the edge of nowhere, waiting for their time to float to the surface, cooked, and ready to serve. “I didn’t take the farm because I didn’t want to work 24×7.” The setting for the Lanchester Farm, a key location in “The Story,” was admittedly inspired partially by farms in popular culture. The quaint aesthetics and hard working characters must have subconsciously appealed to me more than any familiar city setting. The reality is much more involved. Let’s plow through some highlights of my agriculture study notes to see how the farm may change.

This scene in “The Story” concluded a recent float tank session like a vague memory from a life I never lived. Shortly after John (right) arrives at Trishna’s family farm, her father Divit (center) has “the chat” he has with anyone that is considering becoming close friends with any of his daughters or sons. Let’s explore how I’m building this scene, so once I write it formally, it will have the appropriate emotion and resonance.

I never had to seriously answer: “what you want to be when you grow up?” All I had to do was politely finish the required school work then I could lounge. Even as recently as two years ago, I worked hard at jobs, yet had no ambition toward any goals. I was content merely completing the required work so I could return to lounging. Now I’ve discovered my path and what I need to be.

I’ve retreated back to the comfort of infrequently producing ambitious content. While possibly better than producing inconsequential content frequently, I should work on a balance, so here’s an update to The Story. These two LEGO minifigs roughly represent the main characters: John holding a bus rail with his good hand, Trishna in her yellow wheelchair. Most of my recent brainstorming revolves around this transit theme.
