Just as I learn from my mistakes, I also learn from the mistakes of others. It’s not for petty reasons. It’s not to make myself look better than someone else. Rather: this person messed up in a way any reasonable person might act. Let me learn how they failed so …I don’t fail, too! If “The Story” uses Seattle, Washington, as a primary location for inspiration gathering, how closely should its fictional metropolis, Eville, emulate Seattle? You have the International District, University District, Pike Place Market, Space Needle area, “Pill Hill,” Fremont, SoDo, and many more highly-individualized locations that are each just a little different than its neighbors. Though they probably won’t admire the architecture, I imagine John [center] and Trishna [right] will enjoy adventuring through their big city!

What is the goal to your career story? How “did” you get there, if you’re predicting your 10 to 40 year plan? When we start our careers, any opportunity will do, no matter if it’s night shift or underpaid. I don’t think it’s that we become less flexible. It’s that we’ve seen the bad gigs and know that investing our time and effort into “this job” will actually pull us backwards away from our career story’s goal.

The 5-person panel interview at the Department of Revenue was going ‘excellent’ and ‘alright’ simultaneously. Everyone flipped between either word for every answer. Jane was having trouble reading the expressions of the two potential teammates, hiring manager, and two customers when she heard the strangest interview question of her career: “If my team were a farm, what barnyard animal would you be, and why?” She’d brushed up on any applicable modern technology, but nothing agricultural.

How often do you meet new people? Not just regurgitating scripts during transactional interactions with humans, either, how often do you allow yourself open up so that new people can meet you? That does require the vulnerability of letting your guard down, inviting people to see your ego’s grit, and possibly getting hurt. “The Story” will focus on many people and encounters, centering around Trishna (left) and John (right), almost as guides through their world.

If “The Story” is my writing end goal, why distract myself with so much? The rowing makes sense because it’s good to be healthy. Why not compress it down? Spend that time studying fiction? Read the classics? Take classes, write drafts, send them out for criticism, revise, and learn the craft? Well, the thing about John (left) and Trishna (right) is that they’re two shades of our reality spectrum, and their story references it all.
